Governed by one of the park district's guiding principles that established the district's commitment to "respect historical, environmental and conservation significance in developing, maintaining and preserving its land and facilities," the Glenview Park District follows through on its commitment to the environment in a variety of ways
| Protecting Open Space and the Environment through Strategic Plan Initiatives
The Glenview Park District’s Strategic Plan for 2007-2010 includes several environment-related initiatives:

Preserving the Environment at Our Parks and Facilities
- Ownership and operation of the Evelyn Pease Tyner Center and Air Station Prairie, a L.E.E.D. Platinum building and tallgrass prairie built by the Village of Glenview
- Ownership and operation of The Grove National Historic Landmark, a 125 acre nature preserve with an extensive Interpretive Center dedicated to natural history and environmental education
- Sought and received State of Illinois Energy Efficiency Grant to replace Tennis Club lighting system in 2007 resulting in $9,000 annual energy savings
- Upgraded Ice Center mechanical system in 2008 to achieve energy efficiency
- Planted 650 seedlings and 155 trees throughout the district in fiscal year 2008-2009
- Seeds collected by volunteers will be replanted in natural areas
Providing Environmental Education through Our Programs- Expanding schedule of environmental education programs being offered at Air Station Prairie and The Grove including “Going Green,” practical information on how you can incorporate “green” technology into your home
- Hired the district’s first full-time Environmental Education Supervisor to expand environmental programming and community outreach
- Participated in Baby Steps Program –recycling/tree planting cooperative effort with School District 34 and local PTAs
- Together with 11 League of Women’s Voters groups co-sponsored “Our Climate Matters,” a four-day symposium on global warming and ways people can protect and preserve the environment.
- Provided opportunities for citizens to learn about and preserve the environment through Work Days at Air Station Prairie and The Grove (To find out more about these, please click on links at the top of this page).
Promoting Environmental Awareness through Creation of a District-Wide Environmental Team
To build environmental awareness within the park district and the community, the Glenview Park District in 2008 formed a park district Environmental Team composed of representatives from facilities throughout the district. Team responsibilities include:
- Reviewing, evaluating and recommending district-wide environmental policies
- Creating and implementing an Environmental Management System
- Planning, organizing and conducting training on environmental issues
- Assisting in the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of the district’s environmental initiatives

Planning for the Future
In keeping with the Glenview Park District’s commitment to the environment, a number of environmentally friendly practices have been identified for future implementation. These include:
- Use of sustainable energy
- Biodiversity protection
- Natural area restoration
- Carbon footprint reduction
- Raising public awareness through programs and events
- Reduction of pesticide/fertilizer use
- Use of recycled products
- Partnerships with other agencies through Chicago Wilderness Consortium
- Reduction of use of landfill space through District-wide recycling
