Here is quick peek at our amazing district:
|
The Glenview Park District serves over 50,000 residents including all of Glenview and Golf, small portions of Niles, Northbrook, Northfield and Skokie, and unincorporated areas beyond the village limits. Our facilities and programs are open to all.
How is the Park District governed?
The park district is governed by a seven-member Board of Commissioners. They serve without compensation and are directly responsible to the electorate. Day-to-day operations are handled by a professional staff led by an Executive Director.
How is the Park District funded?
Approximately 7.5% of your property tax is paid to the Glenview Park District, which is a separate taxing entity. Taxes provide about 46% of the Park District’s annual operating budget of more than $18 million. The balance of income is derived from user fees, admissions, rentals, sales and so forth. Grants, donations and endowments for special projects provide another source of revenue.
Special-interest facilities such as Glenview Ice Center, Flick and Roosevelt outdoor swimming pools, Glenview Tennis Club, Glenview Park Golf Club, Glenview National 9 Golf Club, Park Center Health & Fitness and Splash Landings Indoor Aquatic Center charge memberships, user fees and admissions. Taxes are not utilized to support the golf courses, Tennis Club or Ice Center.
A Tradition of Community Cooperation
One of the keys to the Glenview Park District’s growth and success throughout the years has been the development of strong cooperative relationships with other government bodies and community organizations. Since the early 1950s, the park district has participated in cooperative agreements with local school districts under which the park district maintains school grounds in exchange for being allowed to utilize school grounds and buildings for program space.
Cooperative efforts with other government bodies and organizations also benefit the community. In 2007 alone, we:
- Took over operation of the Glenview Farmers’ Market from the Glenview Women of Today and moved it to Wagner Farm where it attracted over 16,000 customers
- Joined the League of Women Voters in sponsoring “Our Climate Matters”, a four-day symposium on global warming and the environment
- Assumed operation and management of the Tyner Interpretive Center at Air Station Prairie from the Village of Glenview and began offering opportunities for learning and visitation
- Worked cooperatively with the Village and School district on the massive clean-up effort following the severe August storms
The Glenview Park District remains committed to this tradition of cooperation to bring the best possible recreational opportunities to our residents at the lowest possible cost.
See you soon at the Park!
